Interview with Gordana Sermek

Please, introduce yourself?

My name is Gordana Sermek and most people know me as Goga. I’m 32, born and raised in Croatia.
I’ve been working in a digital media studio for the last 9 years and am currently freelancer looking for job.

Are you a self taught artist or have you been to a art school?

I’m self taught entirely. I started photographing by feeling and instinct but still, I wanted to understand the rules and laws of photography to improve as much as possible. So I started reading photography books and competent magazines.

In Art school I can learn how to take photographs, but I cannot learn how to be a photographer. That is for me to explore and learn. I think it’s all about how passionate the artist is and how hard working he is willing to be. I believe Art school is just a polish in the end and what makes a difference is a natural talent.

Where does your inspiration come from?

It comes from the joy I feel when I wake up in the morning and realize that I am still alive, from the birds outside my window who woke up much earlier than me, from the morning mist hanging over the lake, from droplets of water frosted on the leaf, from the twinkle in mother’s eye, from the melody of child’s laughter, from love of my family and my dreams…
I just need to wake up every morning, be thankful for another day and look around me to see the beauty of every single thing that surround me.

Who is your idol, do you have one?

I admire a lot of people, but I don’t really consider them my idols. I would say I really admire the work more than I admire the person.

How does your job as an artist influence on your everyday life?

It’s not a job, it’s way of life. Life filled with beauty.
I see everyday things in different dimension, in a new light, no matter how insignificant. I’m more aware. I’m more grateful.
I take it as a gift. It helps me stay humble and “little under the stars”.
That makes my life unique and extraordinary in every way.

What kind of hardware and software you use?

I’m photographing with Canon EOS digital system and I use standard 3 year old PC with Windows XP, Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom.

Tell us about your typical work day?

Each day is different and unique. It depends on the job.
Usually, I check my e-mails after I get up. If I have a shoot, I grab some food and go to shooting location.
If I don’t shoot that day, I go out hunting for a good photo to a lake or nearby park. Nature inspires me.

What are your favourite websites?

I visit mostly croatian photo community website Fotozine , DeviantArt, Photo.net, Popular Photography .

Where and how do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself happy and healthy, doing even better photography, having a lot of happy clients and living my life to the fullest.

What makes you happy?

There are a lot of things that make me happy. A company of a friend, a good conversation, a nice music or a movie, traveling to a new place, a rainbow, a joke, a smile, walk in the nature, snow, sunset… and being able to save those moments with my camera.
